EXTERIOR INSTALLATION

Storage Precautions

Wooden products are soft and easy to break, handle with caution when storing or moving the planks. Do not store the wood planks in uncontrolled environmental conditions: water, humidity or direct sunlight. For storage, place a crosspiece at the same length in a horizontal position and store it horizontally.

Pre-construction Inspection

Do not leave the wood on its side for a long time after unpacking. Cracking and twisting may occur depending on the environment of the construction site. Wooden products are soft and easy to break, handle with caution when storing or moving the planks.

Set-Up

Make a temporary line before you begin to install. Because wood is a live material, the colour and variations are unique. Check the pattern and colour balance of the wood. It is highly recommended to protect the surface with a clear protective finish in advance. Dead knots, black knots, crack knots, and chips are treated with putty but minor cracks and dents may appear.

Painted products: check the quality to see if there are uneven paint or scratches. If you notice a defect, please contact us.

Storage before use: keep away from direct sunlight, humidity, rain and moisture.

Color Variation

Due to the nature of the wood, the color and grain vary from each piece. Ultraviolet rays from sunlight can produce a sunburn or discolouration. The color might appear different between the exposed and non-exposed parts.

Longevity & Maintenance

The exterior cladding will change over time with the weather. It will change the local environmental conditions. The conditions that may affect it are direct sunlight (ultraviolet rays), rainwater (acid rain), wind, and a cold and warm environment. Maintaining the product by repainting it regularly can delay the weathering process and preserve the natural look.

It is recommended that you apply a clear permeable protective coating to keep the colour consistent over time. This coating must not interfere with the natural breathing of the wood. Follow all instructions on the product and wear protective gloves.

When applying use a waterproof sheet layer as a base and use a drainer.

If it is not used, there is a risk that the wood or charcoal could adhere to the foundation and stain it.

Use flat head screw nails that are more than three times the plank thickness. Do not use ordinary nails. Put in the nail at a 45-degree angle when installing. Profile No.4,5 and hide nail head. When hitting a nail on the surface, especially for SUMI, the charcoal on the surface tends to peel off, so do not screw the head of the nail strongly.

It is a solid-sawn wood product that can expand and contract depending on the environmental humidity of the site. Mark them out at the time of construction as the expansion and contraction ratio will be different for each plank.

If you attach a sign post-installation, put a material that will act as a reinforcement as the fixed wood will not be strong enough.

SUMI wood, the charcoal on the surface is brittle and peels off due to shock or friction. Be careful.

Installation

  1. Use a stud and furry that are not bent and a dry stud for wall substrate material and finished at intervals of 303 to 455mm. Use screw nails that are more than twice the thickness of the product.

  2. Mark the position of the stud or furry on the base plywood or plasterboard.

  3. Changes in humidity may cause expansion and contraction of the wood. When construction is applied to a place where warping is likely to occur, apply adhesive to the backside.

  4. Use a flat head screw nail that is more than twice the thickness of the board or nails for Yakisugi. Do not use regular nails. In principle, screw nails in two places of width. Screw nails with a 45 degrees angle from the ground when using a Profile No.4, 5 and hide the nail head.

  5. Make a clearance of about 5 mm on both ends of the panelling in the width direction.

  6. When finishing the upper part of the wainscot with plaster, it is easy to cause warps and expansion due to moisture. Be careful.

  7. If you apply a polyurethane coat on an unpainted product, do it before construction. It is recommended to coat both sides to prevent warping and bending.

Curing

Do not attach the curing tape directly to the wall, as it may damage the surface. SUMI products, the charcoal on the surface is brittle and peels off due to shock or friction. Be careful. Cover the entire wall with a curing sheet. If some of them are exposed, they may get sunburned and have a different color than others.
